Cycling Notes #2: Making My Way to Minami-Ashigara (Kanagawa, Japan)

Never miss an opportunity to ride… to live

Heading toward Minamiashigara (Kanagawa Prefecture) along the Sakawa River rewards travelers with magnificent views of Mt. Fuji. With a telephoto lens, it is possible to see one of the zigzagging trails leasing up to the peak.

At the age of 45, I can’t help but wonder:

How many more weekends and holidays dedicated to cycling remain?

How many rides are left to be savored?

How many routes and regions will remain unexplored?

Opportunities for discovery?

For failure?

For chances to learn from failure?

With this in mind, I try…

Never to miss a chance to ride.

Never to miss an opportunity to live.

These are just some of the thoughts that popped into my head as I enjoyed another beautiful winter day of exploratory cycling in Kanagawa Prefecture.

This isn’t my usual kind of writing, but I thought I’d share anyway. After all, the message behind these thoughts applies to much more than cycling. Perhaps these thoughts are the residue of the significant impact that “The Tail End” and Four Thousand Weeks have had on my way of thinking and living.

Technical Tidbits
